Tanzania Travel Guide

Plan your trip to Tanzania

Choose a city and airport first, then compare airlines and routes.

Tanzania’s official eVisa portal describes applications for both the mainland and Zanzibar, with acceptance or rejection notified by email. Check requirements for your documents, purpose and arrival arrangements rather than treating online submission as approval.

How to travel around Tanzania by air

What to expect when flying between cities or connecting after an international arrival.

Flying between cities in Tanzania

  • Distinguish DAR terminal categories
JNIA’s check-in information describes T1 for domestic general aviation, T2 for local flights and T3 for international flights. Confirm your ticket and current airport notices rather than assuming all scheduled domestic flights use T1.
  • Check domestic flight destinations and DAR terminal
Air Tanzania currently lists 15 domestic destinations from its Dar es Salaam hub. Flightlink’s published timetable is valid through 31 May 2027 and distinguishes direct sectors from via-stops; verify the exact airport pair and date with the operating carrier. At Julius Nyerere International Airport, T1 is described for general aviation, T2 for local flights and T3 for international flights; follow your ticket and current airport notice for the terminal.

Arriving from another country

  • Check the eVisa review outcome
The official portal describes email acceptance or rejection notifications, online tracking and possible interviews. Confirm the outcome and follow-up requirements for your category; payment or a reference number is not approval or guaranteed entry.
  • Check inbound insurance for Mainland and Zanzibar
ZIC states that foreign visitors entering Tanzania Mainland require mandatory inbound travel insurance effective 1 October 2026. Qualifying EAC/SADC travellers are exempt from the Mainland requirement only; the notice says this does not automatically exempt entry into Zanzibar. The first point of entry determines the applicable insurer. ZIC also says the same journey does not require duplicate Mainland and Zanzibar policies; retain the valid certificate and QR code. Check current rules for your itinerary and eligibility.

Complete these checks before departure.

Check cabin baggage for connecting carriers

Air Tanzania advises checking cabin-bag weight, size and permitted items before departure and consulting other airlines’ rules for connecting flights. Do not assume one sector’s allowance applies throughout the journey.

How is the Tanzania eVisa application outcome communicated?

The official portal describes email acceptance or rejection notifications and online status tracking.

Does one inbound insurance policy cover a trip that includes both Tanzania Mainland and Zanzibar?

ZIC says a foreign visitor is not required to buy two mandatory inbound policies for the same journey merely because it includes both areas. Qualifying EAC/SADC travellers are exempt only from the Mainland requirement; that does not automatically exempt Zanzibar. The first point of entry determines the applicable insurer. Keep the valid certificate and QR code, and check eligibility for your itinerary.
